Release programming is finished.
All parcels have been packed and were brought to the post office yesterday.
TODAY actually the first one arrived – so I deem this is the time, this is the place – Release is released to the public domain.
Here comes the full package of everthing that is and was Release V1.02:
UPDATE! – Above file was updated on 25th of February 2019!
In version 1.0 there were glitches in the demo mode!
In version 1.01 there could be garbled vectors on rare Vectrex hardware (took two years to come up!).
The above file is about 8.2MB in size. It contains all source code, all music, cartridge label, box title, instructions – everything.
Even the binaries! Please consult the provided textfiles (or see below), which “bin” file to use.
There is even a “making of” history included which consists of 32 different “stages” of Release programming. The earliest from January 2017 when I did first tentative tests, without even the permission of the “Originals”.
After seeing Vectrex Roli’s last Video – one advice for playing Release:
Please adjust the brightness of your Vectrex, so that you can clearly discern the starfield.
That brightnesslevel really makes a visual difference in my opinion.
That said, there are two textfiles included. One for the “user”, one in the source directory for the interested “programmer”.
For convenience sake, here direct links:

I hope some of you have as much fun playing Release as I had porting it.
Malban
Slick graphics with no flicker and very addictive game play.
A big thank you for such an excellent produced game. Plus you give the source code to help educate us slower developers.
I give you a Vectrex salute!
Awesome – thank you! I can’t wait to play.
Amazing game!!! Thank you for all your work!!!!!!
What a great game, thank you so much Malban!
This is the big announcement…for Greek readers!

Best -Vectrex- Regards!
Where to buy one?
Not to buy!
I wish it was possible to buy this in cart form. I don’t use flash carts.
I expect sooner or later a cart form will be available via

That is an awesome roll up of a zip file for release. Thanks for the game and the source!
Pizza? Check!
Knob Creek Maple Flavored Whisky? Check!
Download # 2 of the Release zip file roll up for Vectrex? Check!
The day is now perfect.
After playing it many times now i must say “wow” – thanks so much for releasing “Release”! Please keep on your great support for the Vectrex, Malban.
This game keeps me coming back 🙂
Still a great game – find myself keep coming back to this!
I’ve been playing this a fair bit recently and put it on at a games meet at a friend’s as it makes a great High Score competition game. Quality.
What no announcement about the Polybius update as mentioned elsewhere (Vectrex Fans Unite Facebook page). Should also show some of the fantastic colour pictures made by Jason Kopp and his colour vector monitor.
🙂
Ah… Release-Blog is finished :-).
Polybius was only sent to Jason – its a “private” update (hem – as private as FB can get).
Color will only be “fully” interesting – when/if Jason does the “real” (programmable) color version – you WILL be able to read that on the Vide blog for sure!
Any idea what that problem is – only with one of my vectrexes:

I have a strong suspicion, I emailed you.
If we can confirm it – I might respnd in more detail :-).
I sent you a mail back with my reply.
After receiving a modified version of your game the problem now (nearly) completely disappeared. Maybe we can share the BIN-File for people who ran into similar problems like me – what do you think?
Here’s a video of the actual version:

Many thanks for your fast responses and effort to fix this – you do a fantastic job!
I put a new “Release” version online.
It includes the fixes which are shown in the above video – and also another small update, which might get rid of the last issue with a slight vector offset after printing a number “1”.
The “full downloadable package” now includes all changes and is up to date!
The actual “bug” is due to different vectrex hardware – or so it seems. The “feature” responsible for the crooked looking vectors is described in my other blog:
http://vide.malban.de/30th-of-january-vectrex-variances -> “different “wait” needed for y/z integration circuit”.
The .bins in the “Release” directory are the old ones. The updated .bins are only in the “VRelease” folder. I’m sure most people will figure it out due to the timestamp but just a heads up.
I let David know on Facebook.
Thanks for fixing that. I thought something was wrong with my Vectrex or I would have told you about it a while ago. I suppose it is nice to have a Vectrex with this issue along with one that doesn’t.
Oh man – I am a bit fuzzy it seems. I corrected that too…
Additional information about my vectrex that causes the problem:
German vectrex with serial number 3061202 („buzz version“) and Bios version „7931“.
If ever there is an update of Release,,, This tune be a good tune replacement for Release. Or a tune for a game of a similar nature.
